Endodontists provide an elevated level of service and care for patients who require root canal treatment to save a tooth.

Endodontic patients who have had a dental injury, disease, or needed root canal therapy benefit most from preserving their natural teeth. There is a wide array of research that shows that saving a natural tooth has long-lasting positive effects compared to having a tooth removed and replaced with a bridge or other implant. Not only does root canal therapy preserve the natural appearance and bite of a tooth, a well-treated root canal filling can last up to a lifetime with proper care.

What is a Root Canal?

When a tooth is injured or diseased, the pulp (nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue) inside the tooth can become damaged or infected. When this occurs, the tooth must be removed or treated. The American Association of Endodontics (AAE) recommends that it is always preferable to save a natural tooth rather than extract it. A root canal treatment is the process of removing the infected pulp from the inside of the tooth, cleansing and disinfecting the tooth cavity, and then filling and sealing the tooth to prevent further disease or infection.

Endodontic Care Provides the Best Results

A general dentist can perform a root canal, but will generally refer a patient to an endodontist. This is because endodontists are specially trained to perform this treatment and have the expertise and tools to ensure the patient has a comfortable experience and receives the highest level of care. Endodontists are required to complete an additional two to three years of specialized training on how to diagnose and treat dental pain and disease. Because of this, an endodontist is well-equipped to handle complex cases or to help patients who may be extra sensitive to oral pain or anxious about their treatment.

The AAE states, “If you are given a choice between root canal treatment or tooth extraction, always choose root canal treatment. Dentistry has yet to produce a denture, bridge, or implant that looks, feels, and functions as well as a natural tooth.”

If you are not given the option for a root canal treatment, it is important to ask your dentist for the reason why. If the dentist is uncomfortable performing the procedure, you can ask for a referral to an endodontist or search out a second opinion from an endodontic specialist. The benefits of root canal treatment are so great that it is worth taking the time to find the right care.
